The Perseverance of the Saints
교회를 20년 30년 .... 오래 다녔어도 <성도의 견인>이라는 문구를 처음 듣는 분들이 의외로 많습니다. 그 내용을 오늘 배웁니다.
Article 2: The Believer’s Reaction to Sins of Weakness
Hence daily sins of weakness arise, and blemishes cling to even the best works of saints, giving them continual cause to humble themselves before God, to flee for refuge to Christ crucified, to put the flesh to death more and more by the Spirit of supplication and by holy exercises of godliness, and to strain toward the goal of perfection, until they are freed from this body of death and reign with the Lamb of God in heaven. 인간이 불완전함으로 범하는 날마다의 죄와 결점은 성도로서의 최선의 일을 하도록 만든다. 다시 말하자면, 이러한 죄와 결점은 인간으로 하여금 하나님 앞에서 자기들을 낮추게 하며 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도께만 의지하도록 만드는 영원한 목적을 이루는 것이다. 따라서 성도는 성령으로 기도하며 경건을 연습함으로써 더욱더 육체를 제어하고 완전한 목적을 향하여 나감으로 마지막에 이 육체의 죽음에서 구원받아 하늘나라에서 하나님의 어린양과 함께 통치하게 되는 것이다.
Article 6: God’s Saving Intervention
For God, who is rich in mercy, according to the unchangeable purpose of election does not take the Holy Spirit from his own completely, even when they fall grievously. Neither does God let them fall down so far that they forfeit the grace of adoption and the state of justification, or commit the sin which leads to death (the sin against the Holy Spirit), and plunge themselves, entirely forsaken by God, into eternal ruin. 하지만 변함없는 하나님의 택하심에 기초한 그의 풍성하신 은혜는 비록 성도들이 심각한 죄에 빠져 있을 때라도 성령을 거두시는 것이 아니며, 또한 하나님의 자녀가 되는 그 은혜를 잃음으로 의인의 상태에서 떨어져 나가도록 고통 가운데 방치해 두거나, 성령을 거스리는 죄악을 범하며 전적으로 타락되어 영원한 멸망에 빠지도록 하시지도 않으신다.
Article 7: Renewal to Repentance
For, in the first place, God preserves in those saints when they fall the imperishable seed from which they have been born again, lest it perish or be dislodged. Secondly, by his Word and Spirit God certainly and effectively renews them to repentance so that they have a heartfelt and godly sorrow for the sins they have committed; seek and obtain, through faith and with a contrite heart, forgiveness in the blood of the Mediator; experience again the grace of a reconciled God; through faith adore God’s mercies; and from then on more eagerly work out their own salvation with fear and trembling. 하나님께서는 죄악으로 멸망에 빠져 있는 이 세상 중에서도 결코 썩지 않는 마음의 씨를 보존해 주신다. 다시 말해서 말씀과 성령을 통하여 그들이 회개하여 새롭게 되고, 그들이 지은 죄로 인하여 마음속에 탄식하도록 함으로 중보자의 보혈로 죄 사함을 얻고 나아가 하나님의 사랑을 체험하여 믿음으로 그 은혜에 감사하며 두려운 마음과 수고로써 그들 자신의 구원에 이르도록 부지런히 역사하신다.
Article 8: The Certainty of This Preservation
So it is not by their own merits or strength but by God’s undeserved mercy that they neither forfeit faith and grace totally nor remain in their downfalls to the end and are lost. With respect to themselves this not only easily could happen, but also undoubtedly would happen; but with respect to God it cannot possibly happen. God’s plan cannot be changed; God’s promise cannot fail; the calling according to God’s purpose cannot be revoked; the merit of Christ as well as his interceding and preserving cannot be nullified; and the sealing of the Holy Spirit can neither be invalidated nor wiped out. 그러므로 믿음과 은혜에서 전적으로 떨어져 나가지 않게 하며 범죄로 인한 멸망에서 우리가 구원된 것은 인간의 공로나 노력에 의한 것이 아니라 하나님의 자비에 의한 것이다. 비록 인간은 실수하여 범죄함으로 마음속에 결심이 변한다 할지라도 하나님의 약속은 결코 변하거나 실패하지 않으며 그 약속이 취소되는 일이 없다. 또한 그리스도의 공로와 그 도고의 기도 그리고 성도를 보호해 주시는 그 모든 것은 성령의 인치심으로 되는 일이므로 결코 좌절하거나 무효화되는 일이 없다.
Article 15: Contrasting Reactions to the Teaching of Perseverance
This teaching about the perseverance of true believers and saints, and about their assurance of it—a teaching which God has very richly revealed in the Word for the glory of his name and for the comfort of the godly, and which God impresses on the hearts of believers—is something which the flesh does not understand, Satan hates, the world ridicules, the ignorant and the hypocrites abuse, and the spirits of error attack. The bride of Christ, on the other hand, has always loved this teaching very tenderly and defended it steadfastly as a priceless treasure; and God, against whom no plan can avail and no strength can prevail, will ensure that the church will continue to do this. To this God alone, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever. Amen.
이 세상에 속한 사람들은 성도의 견인에 관한 이 교리와 계시된 말씀 속에서 충분히 나타난 확신성을 이해하지 못하는데, 왜냐하면 하나님께서는 믿는 자들의 마음속에만 자신의 이름의 영광과 성도를 향하신 위로를 심어주셨기 때문이다. 사단은 이를 미워하고 이 세상도 이를 조롱하며, 이 진리를 깨닫지 못한 자들이 이를 남용하고 이단들도 이를 적대시하고 있다.
그러나 그리스도의 신부된 성도들은 날마다 이 사랑을 갖고 마치 놀라운 보배를 가졌듯이 이를 지켜나가야 할 것이다. 또한 하나님은 이 세상 끝날 까지 성도를 보호해 주실 것이요 따라서 오직 한 분이신 하나님, 즉 성부, 성자, 성령께만 영원토록 영광이 있어야 할 것이다. 아멘.
